A Real Story of Impact: Maria’s Story
*Identifying information changed to protect client identity
Maria walked through the Front Royal Pregnancy Center’s doors on a blustery, cold winter day with her little boy in tow. While he was bundled up and well dressed for the icy weather, Maria wore only a thin jacket. The staff at the Center caught up with her and expressed how happy they were to see her again, as it had been a while since her last visit. She explained that she had not needed the extra help, but had recently fallen on hard times. She described how her living situation was now precarious, many of her belongings were stolen, and her husband was recently put in jail. She was worn, tired, and beaten down by life. She finally confided that she was pregnant again and devastated by the news. In desperation, she was actively considering ending the pregnancy. It was clear to see how much the recent events, plus the constant stress of caring for her young son alone and in poverty, weighed on her.
The FRPC staff and team met Maria’s concerns and stressful life difficulties with compassion and support. They told her they would help her in every way they could and backed their words with immediate, practical support. They gathered supplies for Maria and her toddler, including a nice warm winter coat. She was touched by this, as she had no one to look out for her and her needs.
Later, the ultrasound showed a beautiful, active 20-week-old baby! Maria took a deep, hard breath and was moved to tears upon seeing her precious baby, waiting to be loved. She shared that she was sure she wanted to continue the pregnancy.
While Maria verbally committed to parenting her unborn child, the FRPC team members knew that her volatile life situation risked overwhelming her desire to have her baby. The stresses of her real-life difficulties were almost paralyzing, making her unsure of how to move forward. She told those helping her, “I don’t know how to do this. I need some stability and help so I can make myself independent.” The staff encouraged her in this desire and reassured her that they were there to help. That day, she walked out of the Center with a renewed sense of hope!
Over the next few months, the FRPC addressed the most urgent difficulties in her life. They helped her find options for safe and stable housing and connected her to local food resources. They ensured she had clothing for her young son and herself, along with essential daily supplies. Slowly but surely, the Center helped Maria gain independence and stability. A few months later, Maria was able to welcome her new baby with joy, knowing that she was not alone.
Those at the Front Royal Pregnancy Center know Maria and her story well. The Center understands that without its generous donors, the story of Maria and her precious baby would surely have gone another way. While Maria’s story is hard, she is no less worthy of motherhood, and her baby no less worthy of life. That is the root of the Center’s mission: embracing life where it is and serving the most vulnerable right here in their little community!
